Portfolio websites for product designers and UX researchers

Design hiring runs on portfolios more than any other field, which is exactly why building one turns into a two-week side project. This gets a real site published today, styled by describing what you want in plain words.

What belongs on a portfolio for product designers and UX researchers

Show the middle of the process

Polished final screens are the least distinguishing part of a design portfolio, because everyone's final screens look good. The reason you dropped the first direction, the thing testing revealed that you had not expected: that is the part a hiring manager cannot get anywhere else.

Say what changed because of you

Name the decision that moved because of your work. A flow you cut, a default you argued for, a feature that shipped smaller than planned. Attribution matters more than the size of the project.

Make it obvious what you want next

Researchers and product designers get sorted into the wrong pile constantly. One line near the top saying which of the two you are, and what kind of team you want, saves a reader from guessing wrong.

One thing to avoid: One strong case study beats five thin ones. If a project cannot support a few honest sentences about what you decided, it is padding, and it dilutes the work that can.
